Known with certainty solely from a unique male specimen collected in central Brazil in the early 19th century, the Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). Hooded Seedeater Sporophila melanops was one of the great enigmas of Neotropical ornithology, the only one of a host of once long-lost species from Brazil to remain obstinately undiscovered.

This talk describes efforts to rediscover it in the field, which were partially funded by the Birdfair / RSPB Research Fund for Endangered Birds, and the eventual resolution to the mystery using genetics.
