Britain is a land stripped bare of large animals. Just a geological eyeblink ago, during the last ice age, we had mammoths and woolly rhinos, cave lions and scimitar cats, Irish elk and cave hyaenas. What do we know about these amazing creatures? Why are they not around and do the more recent disappearances of wolves, lynxes, aurochs, bears, and beavers tell us more about the causes? Can we, or should we, try to turn the clock back?
