Situated at the tip of Africa, the Western Cape Province of South Africa has high levels of endemism with the core range of a number of endemic and near endemic bird species being centred on this province. Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Protea Seedeater, as well as the enigmatic Cape Rockjumper, are restricted to the province.
The region is also home to some of the best sea birding in the world, primarily due to the influence of the upwelling created by the cold Benguela current and is the stronghold for Africa’s only penguin as well as other Benguela endemics including Bank, Cape and Crowned cormorants and Cape Gannet.
