A birder’s personal journey that culminates in seeing 300+ birds in Britain in a year.

Hands up if your career is not your first passion? For me escape this past 43 years has been ‘Birding and Twitching’ e.g. the thrill of rare bird pursuit, in-field identification, beautiful places visited, eventful journeys and unique characters met.

Locating and identifying a rare bird in the field is complex. What one observer can identify in a 5th of a second may simply appear as a blob to another. Are some of us re-invoking primeval hunting instincts then, or simply re-educating our brain to see that which others cannot? Is it all nonsense and fun, or, is there something deeper that drives us? For birders, the list of species identified is sacrosanct; trust paramount. We don’t collect, we just list and it can get competitive.

The book takes a philosophical view, a rollercoaster ride, that takes up the challenge of seeing more than half the wild bird species ever recorded in Britain in just one year. It won’t be all plain sailing.

This will be followed by the opportunity to purchase and have signed Terry’s publications.
