Bonelli’s eagle disappeared from Majorca in the 60’s of the 20th century. Since 2011, the initiative of the Government of the Balearic Islands, together with the LIFE BONELLI project (2013-2017,, has allowed the return of this magnificent eagle to the island, networked together with other reinforcement projects in three Iberian regions (Madrid, Álava and Navarra), where the species is almost disappeared.
The results are already visible: ten pairs established in Mallorca (6), Madrid (2), Álava (1) and Navarra (1) and twelve chickens born (11 in Mallorca, one in Álava). The Bonelli’s eagle has regained the throne of the natural kingdom on the island: it is now hunting species that had been left without predator, such as the yellow-legged gull. In addition, it has also become one of the stars of birdwatching on the island.
